June 20 is World Refugee Day The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has designated June 20 as Refugee Day. In many parts of the world, various ceremonies are organised to commemorate this day as a reminiscent of the suffering of millions of people who have been forced to leave their country under the pressure of tyrannical and oppressive governments or as a result of war, famine and environmental change in search of a better human life. According to UNHCR reports around 1% of the global population which is about 100 million people were forced to leave their home. The number includes refugees and people seeking asylum. The International Organization for Migration also reported in May this year that a record 59.1 million people were displaced within their homelands last year by conflict which was four million more than in 2020.
